Gertrude Irene Van Zee, the oldest daughter of Kryn and Walterina (De Koning) Van Zee, was born January 19, 1931, in a farmhouse five miles south of Sully, Iowa on the Jasper County line.

Gertrude attended the Iron Clad No.11 Country School, grades first through fifth, and Sully Christian Grade School through the eighth grade. She made profession of faith in the Sully Christian Reformed Church at the age of seventeen. At age forty-nine, she received her G.E.D. and certification as a nurse's aide.

She was united in marriage at the age of twenty-two to Abraham (Abe) Jan De Kock, son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Bijl) De Kock on June 17, 1953, in Sully, Iowa. To this union six children were born, Allen Dean, Karen Ann, Edwin Leroy, David Wayne, Judy Lynn and Greta Mae.

She and Abe farmed near Olivet, Iowa for a year and then lived south of Pella, Iowa for four years. In March of 1959, they moved to Pella. For several years Abe and Gertrude cleaned at the Pella Co-operative. Gertrude continued to raise her children and maintain her home after Abe’s death on November 25th, 1978, at the age of just 47 years. She was a nurse’s aide at Hilltop South and then provided home health care. Later she was employed by Heritage Lace cutting Dutch lace.

After forty-four years, she moved to the Pella Manor in 2003. Following a diagnosis of dementia and then later Alzheimer's, she moved to Hilltop Manor North, Jefferson Place, and then to the Pella Regional Health Center Long Term Care Unit. Gertrude passed away there on Sunday, May 13, 2012, at the age of 81 years.

Those who will cherish her memory are her three sons, two daughters, their spouses, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren

Of her original family surviving are Gertrude’s sisters and brothers and their spouses: Johanna (Murray) Vos of Pella, Lenora (Roger) Van Norden of Reasnor, Iowa, Alberdina and Gary Van Wyk of Sully, Iowa, Clarence and Judy Van Zee of Lynnville, Iowa, Lawrence and Sandy Van Zee of Sully. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Jennie (De Kock) and John Veenstra of Pella, Iowa, Jean Veldhuizen (Engel De Kock) of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Nancy (Andrew II) De Kock of Marshalltown, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Abraham De Kock; one infant daughter, Judy Lynn; one grandson, Hayden Holoubek; her parents, Kryn and Walterina Van Zee; an infant brother; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Andrew and Elizabeth De Kock; and four brothers-in-law: Murray Vos, Roger Van Norden, Engel De Kock, and Andrew De Kock II preceded Gertrude in death.

Abe and Gertrude were long-time members of Calvary Christian Reformed Church of Pella where she was a member until her death.
