Margaretta Hockett, age 94, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Calvin Community in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at West Des Moines United Methodist Church, 720 Grand Avenue, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery.

Margaretta was born November 8, 1918 in Pella, Iowa to Hubert and Catherine (DeHaan) Slobe. She was raised in Pella and graduated from Pella High School. She attended Central College in Pella where she was editor of the newspaper and valedictorian of her 1940 graduation class.

Margaretta taught high school English and Latin in Akron, Belle Plaine and Pella, Iowa from 1940 to 1948. She married Glenn Hockett in 1948 and moved to the Des Moines area, where they built a home in West Des Moines and raised three children.

Margaretta returned to teaching in 1959 at Valley High School where she taught her favorite subject Latin, as well as English, composition, and math until retiring in 1982. She and Glenn traveled extensively. Their home remained the center point of the family, as she and Glenn made every grandchild feel special. Margaretta enjoyed the activities of her organizations, as well as volunteering at her church library, working crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, and cross stitching.

Margaretta was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, West Des Moines Women's Club, Delta Kappa Gamma International Educational Society, and the Iowa State Education Association.

Margaretta was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her parents; sister, Helene Scholten; and brother, William Slobe. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine (Erin) Corrigan of Ankeny; two sons, Verlin (Constance) of Greenfield and Glenn Eric (Connie) of West Des Moines; as well as 12 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McLaren's Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Des Moines United Methodist Church Library Fund or the Calvin Community Good Samaritan Fund. ~ The Des Moines Register, Thurs 4 Apr 2013.
