Obituary for Ben W. Mulder

Benjamin William Mulder was born on March 14, 1921, at Hawarden, Iowa. His mother was Ida (Borgman) and his father was Ed Mulder. They were the parents of ten children and Ben was their fifth child. He grew up on the family farm and attended country grade school through the 8th grade at Hawarden. At the age of 16 years Ben and the family moved to a farm near Ireton, Iowa.

It was here that Ben met Josie Anema at a youth group at the Ireton Christian Reformed Church. On November 3, 1942, they were united in marriage at the home of her parents, Paul and Kathrine (Van Schepen) Anema.

On October 24, 1942 Ben was drafted into the United States Army and entered active military service on November 7, 1942. On May 27, 1944, their daughter, Carol Jean, was born.

He served as a medical technician in northern France and Central Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged on October 27, 1945. He received several decorations and citations for his service and he remained a proud veteran for his military service the remainder of his lifetime.

Following his discharge he and Josie returned to the family farm near Ireton where they farmed for 11 years. During this time their three sons were born: Clifford Dean on April 10, 1947, Dennis Lee on June 10, 1950 and Benton Jay on December 15, 1955. In 1962 the family moved to Pella, Iowa where Ben worked for Farm Service and the Farmers Cooperative Exchange in Jasper and Marion counties until his retirement in 1984. He then enjoyed doing woodworking and carpentry work and loved fishing at Lake Okoboji. He and Josie enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and various other places and spending the winters in Redlands, California. They were privileged to enjoy 71 years of marriage and in December, 2013, became residents at the Vriendschaap Village in Pella. Ben and Josie assisted each other there and on Friday, January 10, 2014, he passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella at the age of 92 years.
