Simon Verhoef, born the fifth of eight children on November 29, 1924 to William and Jannetje (Van der Lee) Verhoef in Baambrugge, The Netherlands passed away on March 19, 2009 in Pella, IA.
He was baptized and made profession of faith in the Gereformerde Kerk of Baambrugge.
On January 30, 1947 he married Johanna Griffeon. To that union was born three sons and two daughters: William, Gary, Janny, Nellie, and Daniel.
In 1952 Simon and Johanna and their three oldest children immigrated to the United States. They rented a number of farms around Oskaloosa, IA finally buying a small dairy farm three miles east of Oskaloosa from Tone and Dorothy Vander Wilt.
In 1975 Simon retired from farming. He and Johanna moved to Pella and he worked as a custodian for the Pella Public Schools for 12 years, retiring from that job in 1987.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Johanna, of 57 years in 2004, as well as his parents, his sister Jannetje Vanden Bosch and brother, Harmen Verhoef. Those surviving him are his five children and their spouses, 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Rev. William and Ruth (Van Ee) Verhoef of Redlands CA, Gary and Corinne (Danhof) Verhoef of Pella IA, Janny and Gerald Van Dusseldorp of Colorado Springs CO, Nellie and Les Fee of Pella IA and Daniel and Lois (Kampenga) Verhoef of Fayetteville, GA.
His surviving brothers and sisters are: Wim Verhoef of Pella, Mar Smit of The Netherlands, Jan and Rie Verhoef of The Netherlands, Nell De Groot of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Carrie and Tunis Van Walbeek of Pella, Brother-in-law: Barend Vanden Bosch of The Netherlands and Sister-in-law Emma Verheul of The Netherlands.
Simon was a much loved father and grandfather who loved his children and doted on his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery, Leighton, Iowa
