Martinson, Allyn C. 1944-2009

Allyn Charles Martinson was born on July 1, 1944, in Hendricks, Minnesota. He was the son of Clayton Gayheart and Alice Lillian Quickstad Martinson.

Allyn attended grade school in Toronto, South Dakota and graduated from Toronto High School with the Class of 1962. He then enrolled at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD.

On June 13, 1964, he was united in marriage with Darlene Kaye Hicks at the Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto and they were blessed with two daughters: Lori Jean and Tia Jo. Allyn worked in a clothing store and for a grain elevator and graduated from South Dakota State with a BS degree in Economics.

Following his graduation they moved to Yankton, South Dakota where he was employed at a fertilizer plant. In 1968 he became involved in a junior lender program at a bank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. From 1970 until 1976 he was a loan officer at a bank in Brookings, South Dakota and in 1977 became president of the Northwestern Bank in Austin, Minnesota. Allyn held this position until 1982 when he became president of the First Interstate Bank in Estherville, Iowa. Then in 1990 he accepted the position of president at the Pella National Bank in Pella, Iowa. Allyn retired in August of 2000.

In addition to his contributions as a bank president, Allyn impacted economic development. While in Estherville he was involved in the Economic Development Commission and the Iowa Lakes Community College. He was a founding member of the Pella Area Development Corporation and from 1991-2000 served as a board member and president. Having made several trips to Washington DC, he was instrumental in making Pella known to those in the nation’s capital. His leadership, generosity and encouragement were evident. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, good food, boating, traveling and "car stuff".

On Saturday evening, February 7, 2009, he passed away at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella, Iowa at the age of 64 years.

Allyn is survived by his family: Darlene K. Martinson; Lori J. and her husband, Stuart De Nooy and their two children: Sydney and Brooke De Nooy of Pella, Tia J. Martinson of New Haven, Connecticut; Patti and Chris Johnson and their two children: Andrew and Elena Johnson of Waukee, Iowa, and Dan De Nooy and his wife, Sheri and their two children: Anna and Cole De Nooy of Leighton, Iowa. Allyn leaves his two sisters and their husbands: Carol and Rex Warland of State College, Pennsylvania, Eileen and Richard Shane of Brookings, South Dakota; and four sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Wylla (Hicks) and Claire Konold, Watertown, South Dakota, Janet (Hicks) and James Hurlbut of Raymond, South Dakota, Arlene (Hicks) and Dennis Milton of Hayti, South Dakota, Peggy (Hicks) and Wayne Knutson of Toronto, South Dakota.

Allyn was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Alice Martinson; a sister, Lorraine Martinson who died in infancy and a brother-in-law, Eugene Hanson.

Allyn was a proud Rotarian for many years. He was a deacon in the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Estherville and was presently affiliated with the Midwest Arise Ministries. Allyn’s religious convictions were expressed in his witnessing as a mentor, friend, employee, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
