Dorothy Elaine Proffitt, 73, of rural Knoxville, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at her home after a brief battle with cancer.

Dorothy was born on March 13, 1934, to Deke and Birdie Karns in Pleasantville, where she lived most of her life until moving to their country home at Lake Red Rock in 2004. She was a 1951 graduate of Pleasantville High School. On Oct. 22, 1954, she married Phillip Guy Proffitt.

In earlier years, Dorothy worked at Ten X Manufacturing, Pleasant Care Nursing Home, Pleasantville State Bank and Central National Bank in Des Moines. She was a member of Pleasantville American Legion Auxiliary and St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Dorothy loved reading mystery novels as well as watching and identifying birds. She made beautiful bed quilts and later she was known for her gifts of baby quilts. She was a great cook and loved company and travel but especially enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Dorothy will be remembered as a caring and loving person to her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Jess Karns and two sisters, Helen Koons and Ruth Dixon.

Dorothy is survived by her husband of 53 years, Phil, three children; Craig (Mary) Proffitt, Mike (Jana) Proffitt, both of rural Knoxville, Cindy Proffitt and fiancé Tony of Knoxville; grandchildren; Angela (Eric) Graham, Amy (Tony) Hansen, Zach Pettyjohn, Breanna and Rilee Proffitt, Kandis and Kendra VandeVoort; great-grandchildren; Ashley, Hadlee and Brodey Hansen, Dawsyn Graham and Alex VandeVoort, brother, Dwight Karns, sister, Mary Clark, both of Pleasantville along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service was held at Mason Funeral Home in Pleasantville on Nov. 29 with Rev. Jeff Flagg officiating. Internment was in the Pleasantville Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Pella or Gladys Black Memorial.
