Peter Van Ham 1911-1997

Peter Van Ham, the son of Leendert Willem and Margrietha (Booi) Van Ham, was born on July 7, 1911, near Kellogg in Jasper County, Iowa. He passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 1997, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of eighty-six years, one month and twenty-seven days.

On January 7, 1935, he was united in marriage to Minnie Wilma Langstraat at Melvin, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: James Leonard, Pauline, Lee R., Phoebe, Lois and Julia.

Peter trusted Christ as his Saviour at an early age and did teaching and pastoral work for many years. For the past thirty-four years he has been the Pastor of the Columbia Baptist Tabernacle at Columbia, Iowa. He preached in Knoxville and Pella nursing homes for the past twenty-five years. He attended meetings of the Association of Fundamental Ministers and Churches and also the Pella Ministerial Association for many years. He had also been employed part time for Pella Glass and Home Improvement for over twenty years. Earlier he had worked part time for the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service (ASCS) measuring land and surveying for contour farming. Peter had lived and worked a small farm west of Pella for fifty-five years.

Peter is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Minnie; four children, Pauline and her husband, Don Brader, of Bend, Oregon, Lee R. Van Ham and his wife, Juanita, of Warrenville, Illinois, Phoebe Van Ham of Wheaton, Illinois, and Lois and her husband, LeRoy Kelderman, of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Leonard at age 3 years; a daughter, Julia at the age of twelve years; and his parents.
