William M. Van Maanen

VAN MAANEN, TEN BOSCH, STEPHENSON

William Maurice Van Maanen, the sixth of nine children born to Brandt and Pieternella Jacoba Willemina Ten Bosch Van Maanen, was born on January 13, 1899 near Leighton, iowa. He attended country grade school near Leighton. On February 15, 1928 he was united in marriage with Helen Mae Stephenson at her parents' home and to this union two daughters were born: Florence Joan and Frances Evelyn. Bill and Helen spent most of their lifetime together farming in the Leighton vicinity. In 1981 they retired and moved into the Lindview Apartments in Pella, Iowa. They enjoyed their retirement and their residence in Pella. Helen passed away February 11, 1988, just four days prior to their 60th Wedding Anniversary. On August 17, 1988 William passed away at his residence in Pella at the age of 89 years. He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands: Florence and Allen Rempe of Leighton; Frances and Ralph Watson of San Dimas, California; five grandchildren: Sandra Rempe of Columbia, Missouri; Jack and Tami Rempe of Leighton; Mark Rempe of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Linda and Alan Donaldson of Fairborn, Ohio; and Janet and Randy Salzwedel of Fargo, North Dakota; and four great-grandchildren: Nicholas Allen, Tyler James and Christopher William Rempe and Christa Jo Salzwedel. He also leaves two sisters-in-law: Mrs. Luella (Reuben) Van Maanen and Mrs. Irene (Fred) Van Maanen both of Pella. Bill was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death besides his wife, helen, by his parents and all his sisters and brothers: Aletta Johanna, who died at the age of two years; Nichaolas Van Maanen; Aletta Votaw; Gysbert, who died during military service at the age of 23, and Elbert Van Maanen; John, who died at the age of 20 years; Andrew Frederick and Reuben Van Maanen. Mr. Van Maanen became a member of the Leighton Christian Reformed Church in Leighton at an early age. Following his marriage he transferred to the Ebenezer Reformed Church where he remained a faithful member the remainder of his lifetime. Bill was a board member for the Prairie Farmer's Mutual Insurance Board for over 50 years and was an active member of the Farm Bureau. His family is thankful for the long life he was blessed with and give thanks to God for their Christian father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
