An Enjoyable Celebration Held at W. S. Whaley’s Wednesday
On June 2, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Whaley celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage, at their pleasant country home near Durham. To Mr. and Mrs. Whaley were born six children, all of whom are living and were present on this memorable occasion. The children with their families are: Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Whaley and daughter Mary, Fox Lake, Minn.; Mrs. Fannie McLaughlin and daughters Stella and Minnie, Clear Lake, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Currier, Indianola; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Whaley, Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Les Whaley and daughters Irene and Marion, Burlington; and Pleas Whaley, Plains, Mont.
A sumptuous dinner was thoroughly enjoyed by the large company. On being seated at the table, following the giving of thanks, Mrs. John Whaley repeated these lines:
“Draw near the board with plenty spread,
And if, in its accustomed place,
You see the father’s reverent head,
The mother’s patient, loving face,
Whate’er this life may hold of ill,
Thank God that these are left us still.”
Following the dinner all enjoyed themselves, talking over bygone days and playing with the children.
L. B. Snodgrass was present with his picture machine and photographed the family and the whole company. Rev. E. Winslow Brown, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Knoxville, responded to requests for a speech, voicing the sentiments of the company. The “groom” was called upon and the tender tribute he paid to his companion of fifty years showed the regard in which Mrs. Whaley is held in the home, and brought tears to many eyes. It was a fine picture of beautiful home life. Aside from those already mentioned there were present: Henry Armstrong, Hyannis, Neb.; Wm. Smith and wife, Tracy; Mary Rodgers, Salina, Kansas; John Redding and wife, I. T. Maddy and wife, Mrs. Daisy Jacob and son Homer, Charles Miller, wife and children, Earl, John and Alta, John Larew, wife and children, Ernest, Grace, Clarence and Hattie, of Harvey; T. T. McMillan and wife, Mrs. James Larew and daughter Blanche, of Durham; Mrs. Ida Everett and daughters Tessie and Catharine, Mr. and Mrs. John Whaley and son Floyd, Mrs. Maggie Smith, Mrs. John Kamerick and children, John and Emmajean, Mr. and Mrs. Worth Gregory and sons James and Harold of Knoxville.
