This is genealogical information I have gathered on Teunis Klein, the brother of my direct ancestor, Gerrit Klein (Gerrit Klein was my grandfather Arnold Joshua Klein's grandfather). A large clan of Kleins came over from the Netherlands on the same ship in 1847.

On the voyage, three out of four of Teunis Klein's children died. The likely cause was an outbreak of measles or similar childhood disease that spread quickly among the children from living in such close quarters on the ship, which was a totally different environment from their farm in Leerdam. Teunis Klein died in a cholera outbreak in Iowa in 1854.

My family certainly loved the name Gerrit. Sorting them out is quite a challenge. The family of my grandfather Arnold Joshua Klein's father Henry G. Klein takes the prize for being the most confusing:

Henry G. Klein's father's name was Gerrit, his grandfather's name was Gerrit, and Henry G. Klein had not one but TWO older brothers named Gerrit - Gerrit H. and Gerrit John!
