Oskaloosa Daily Herald, Oskaloosa, IA, October, 1913.

SHAW -- Funeral of the late Susanna Shaw, wife of William H. Shaw was held from the family home, No. 1217 South Market Street, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Roy E. Deadman of the Christian Church officiating. Attendance at the family home was large and representative, several of the organizations of which Mrs. Shaw was a member, attending in a body. The following to the cemetery for the grave service was also larger than usual. The casket which had been placed near the front of the home rested in a great bank of palms and flowers. Contributions from friends, neighbors, acquaintances, associates in church and society organizations and invididual were numerous and elegant and indicated the esteem in which this good woman had been held by an extended acquaintance. In keeping with the wish expressed by Mrs. Shaw, the services were brief and simple but the tribute paid by the minister was most appropriate and appealed deeply to those intimately acquainted with the life and the doings of the deceased; faithful, loyal, sincere, devoted, ready at all times to act in the line of duty service. Patient in health, in sickness, she accepted her lot nor thought of self but the first concern was for the comfort and well being of others. Results and influence of her life are far reaching, permanent. Many drew help from her wonderful resources, bountiful in its supply. Younger ones have been strengthened in faith and recalled to (unreadable) consecreation through the personal comfort of this truly remarkable personality and older ones have rejoiced in her comradeship. Even the minister came to look upon her for a source of sustaining grace, for she was ever in her place at service, always on time and ever dependable. Though her burdens have been lightened, sorrows assuaged, blasted hopes renewed, and faith in God and man reassured, because of the character of her life and her spirit. She was furthermore a woman who dignified the common place things of life and by her industry and untiring zeal taught to all the nobility of labor. She was everything in her home, the ideal wife and mother. Mrs. Shaw for a term of twenty-five years has been a deaconess of the Christian Church of Oskaloosa and her membership in the organization dates far back to the formative period of the church organization in the community. She was a woman with whom we can ill afford to part and not alone in the home will she be missed but in the broader field of her endeavor, her place must remain unoccupied. Her life unconsciously stood as an example, a model for those who came in contact with her. She was ever busy, yet she always had time for any call made upon her. Her eveness of temperment, her bright disposition, cheerfulness, happiness were reflected by the work of her hand. A smile here, a kind word there--she was sunshine itself. One of the things said of the woman when the announcement of her death went forth came from a young woman whose life had been touched. "If I could only be like Mrs. Shaw."

Music for the funeral was furnished by members from the Christian Church choir and a solo by Dr. F.J. Jarvis.

Pall bearers were: Thomas Soseman, Charles M. Porter, Benjamin Cruzen, O/O. Hedge, E.R. Hatcher and Harry Greist.

Relatives and intimate friends present from a distance for the funeral called by the illness and the death of Mrs. Shaw were: Mrs. S.J. Yeomans of Des Moines and Mrs. C.S. Watts of Norway, Iowa; Frank and Orin McWilliams of Des Moines; sister and brothers of the deceased; a niece, Mrs. Belle, Pears; Fred Yeomans, Marysville, Missouri; Mrs. Elizabeth McBride, sister of Mr. Shaw, Wright, Iowa; Capt. W.A. Rankin of Tarklo, Missouri, and Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Cannon and sister, Mrs. McBride of Fremont.
