Obituary: Wednesday, August 20th, occurred the death and at 2:30 o'clock Saturday the 23rd, the funeral services and burial of one of our best known citizens, Christopher Columbus Phillips, who was born in Mahaska County, near Leighton, March 8, 1849, having attained the age of 64 years, 5 months, and 12 days. "Clum" lived in this vicinity all his life and was well known by most every one and especially by the farmers of whom he was one, until he retired from farm life and came to Tracy some twelve or fifteen years ago. He was united in marriage to Harriett MacAdoo, April 10, 1870. To this union there were born eight children, five of whom survive him: Mrs. Viola Patterson, who lives in Missouri; Columbus Jr., residing in Harvey; Walter and Samuel of this place, and Mrs. Minta Phillips Butler of Leighton. Andrew died in Idaho some six months ago, Barney passed away in 1906, and an infant daughter died several years ago. A brother, John, lives at St. Charles, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Cleghorn of Osceola and Katie Clark of Knoxville, were all present. Another sister, Julia Wray, of California, could not be present. Besides these there are eighteen grandchildren. The services were held in the church conducted by the local pastor, Leslie Moore, assisted by J.E. Cavin. Interment was made in the family lot in Bellefountain Cemetery.
