PELLA-Martin Ryken, 79, of Pella died Tuesday, June 3, 1986 at the Pella Community Hospital. He was born Oct. 30, 1906 near Peoria in Mahaska County, the son of Gerrit J. and Nellie De Jong Ryken.
He grew up and attended school in Peoria. On March 6, 1936, he married Antonia Ida Bos in Oskaloosa. They made their home in Oskaloosa from 1936-1951. They then moved to Otley where they lived until 1966, when they moved to Pella. He was retired from farming. He was a charter member of the Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella. He also served on the Christian School Board and church council. He was instrumental in starting the Christian Grade School in Oskaloosa.
He is survived by his wife Antonia; two daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Arie) Vink and Ardith Beaver, both of Pella; four sisters: Johanna Brummel of Oskaloosa, Rachel Ryken of Pella, Marie Blom of Pella, Nellie Uitermarkt of Monroe; three brothers: John, Frank and Dick, all of Pella; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; George and Gysbert; four sisters: Jennie Ryken, Emma Mieuwsma, Nellie Ryken, and Bertha Stouwie.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Bates Christian Reformed church in Pella with Rev. James Stoel officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton. Memorials may be made to the Pella Christian Schools. Visitation will be at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella. The family will receive friends and relatives this evening.
