Funeral services for Eldred L. Adkins, 69, of rural Searsboro were held February 1 at the New Sharon Christian Church in New Sharon, the Pastor Phil DeBoef officiated. Interment was at Barnes City Cemetery.

Eldred was born on September 29, 1933 in Mahaska County to Gasper and Clara Minner Adkins. He attended Star Country School and New Sharon High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On May 19, 1956 Eldred was united in marriage to Junella Valster at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Barnes City briefly before settling on their farm near Searsboro.

He had previously attended the Searsboro Friends Church and was a member of the New Sharon Christian Church where he served on the Elders Board and also as a Deacon. Eldred was the recipient of the 1999 Region 7 and District Conservation Awards. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and with his family.

He died Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at his home from injuries sustained in a farming accident.

He is survived by his wife, Junella of Searsboro; a son, John Adkins and wife Tammy of Montezuma; two daughters: Connie Brown and husband Mike of New Sharon, and Debra Johnson and husband Mike of Grinnell; a sister, Velma Adkins of New Sharon and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arrangements were handled by Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon.

Memorials may be made to the New Sharon Christian Church.
