Obituary.
Emma Beal Mitchell, daughter of Hiram and Jerusha McDonald Beal was born on a farm in Logan County, Ohio, July 10th, 1842. When but a small child she removed with her parents to Mahaska County and settled upon a farm in Prairie Township well known in later years as the Cathcart farm, adjacent to Garden Hall, and now occupied by the Blanke family. This farm was raw prairie till her parents broke it up and improved it. The house they built is still occupied and stands upon the highest point of ground in Mahaska County.
In this home on March 27th, 1864, she was united in marriage with Robert Mitchell. They made their new home in Madison Township upon the well known Mitchell farm, where they continued to live for more than 50 years. The children having grown up and moved to homes of their own, this couple, now well advanced in years, in order to get relief from the labors of the farm, on March 1st, 1915 moved to Oskaloosa. Here on March 7th, 1920, the husband and father passed on. After the death of her husband Mrs. Mitchell refused to go to the children but continued to maintain a home of her own as a gathering place for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends until November 4th, 1929, when the death Angel called her to give up this home for another, "not made with hands," at the ripe old age of 87 years, 4 months and 25 days. This, in brief, is the life history of one whose length of days witnessed the transition of Iowa form the days of the pioneer with his ox team and covered wagon to that of the auto and the paved road. She is survived by two children, Jacob H. Mitchell and Jerusha Bartlett, both of Mahaska County; fourteen grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren, one brother, Hiram Beal of New Sharon, Iowa, besides other relatives and many friends. Her life was long and useful and she so numbered her days that death had no terrors for her but was welcomed as a looked for friend.
Funeral services, after a prayer service at the house, were held at Greenwood Church in charge of Rev. F. Lindly Jones, pastor of Friends meeting in Oskaloosa. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Tom Hite, Maxine Howard, Maxine Carter and Luther Howard, with Mrs. Tom Hite at the piano. Interment was made in the Friends cemetery in New Sharon.
