BASS - Died, at her home in Monroe township, Sunday morning, Sept. 9, at four o'clock, of a complication of diseases, Mary E., wife of W.M. Bass, aged 50 years next November. The funeral was held Monday, at a 11 o'clock, at the house. Rev. J.D. Guthrie, of this city, preaching. The remains were interred in Wymore cemetery. Mrs. Bass was the youngest daughter of Alfred and Nancy Atwood. She was born in Shelby county, Indiana, and came to Iowa with parents in 1850. About 12 years ago she married W.M. Bass. Their married life was happy until some three years ago, when her health failed. Since then everything that loving hands could do and the best medical skill failed to help her. She was not a church member, but told her friends that she was prepared to die. She was a kind and faithful wife, a good neighbor, loved and respected by all who knew her. She leaves a devoted husband, and a sister, with many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. The husband has the heartfelt sympathy of this entire community in this the saddest of all bereavements, the loss of a bosom companion. (The Oskaloosa Herald, Sept. 13, 1888, p. 2)
