John P. Herny (1923-2005)

John Philip Herny, age 81, of Leighton, IA passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, January 24, 2005, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House; he was 81 years, 6 months and 2 days of age.

John was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau, Rural Farm Family Group, Ruritan, the Mahaska County Historical Society, and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

Born July 22, 1923, on the family farm near Leighton, he was the son of Ike & Marie Dusenbery Herny. He attended Black Oak - Scott Center grade school and was a 1940 graduate of Pella High School. He married Marilyn Kool on June 1, 1954, at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. John's passion was to carry on the family farming tradition, which he did actively until age 80 when an accident forced him into retirement.

Survived by his wife, Marilyn of Leighton; his children: David (Ann) Herny of Albia, IA; Susan (Michael) Lee of Joliet, IL; Mark (Nora) Herny of Cedar Rapids, IA; Diane (Greg) Gordy of Oskaloosa; and Lisa Smith of Oskaloosa; and a sister Kay Moats of Mt. Prospect, IL. John was blessed with eleven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held on Friday morning, January 28, 2005, at ten-thirty o'clock at Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert Dean officiating. Private Family Interment was held at Forest Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel.
