Gary Swanson (1932-2004)

Gary Dale Swanson, son of Dale Eldon & Lucille Emily Ellis Swanson was born on July 24, 1932 at his home in Givin, Iowa. He was a 1950 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and a 1954 graduate of William Penn College. He received a Master's Degree from Drake University, where he also received credit towards a P.H.D. in math. Gary married Judith Kay Lomax on July 13, 1964 in Oskaloosa, IA. He began his math and science teaching career in Waukon and Burlington, IA, he then taught in Bussey, IA, which eventually became the Twin Cedars School District. In addition to teaching, Gary maintained his farm in the Givin area, where he raised Hereford cattle. Gary was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bussey, Eastern Star in Bussey & Eddyville and was a 32nd Degree Mason; he was a life member of the Teachers Association, and the National Rifle Association, a 40-year member of the Farm Bureau, a member of the Elks Lodge, and a past member of the Lions Club in Bussey. Being an excellent marksman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Gary passed away at the New Sharon Care Center on Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 14 days.

Gary is survived by his wife, Judy of Oskaloosa; and his cousin, Andrea Dursky and her husband, Dennis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Larry Swanson.

Funeral services were held at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel, Saturday Morning, December 11, 2004, at ten-thirty o'clock, Reverend Don Job officiating. Interment was held at Henness Cemetery located in East Des Moines Township in Mahaska County, Iowa.
