Art Scholtus (1923-2005)

Art Scholtus, 81, of Rose Hill, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at the New Sharon Care Center in New Sharon. He was born September 15, 1923, at rural Reasnor, the son of Aart and Carrie Horman Scholtus. On August 18, 1945, he was united in marriage to Margaret Wilson in Oskaloosa, and she died November 9, 2002. Early in his adult life he worked for Angus Coal Mine, east of Oskaloosa, as a truck driver. Art then worked for Ruan Transport Corporation in Des Moines as a truck driver, hauling petroleum and asphalt and he retired from Ruan in the mid 1970's. In retirement Art hauled livestock locally, and he bought and operated a farm in Mahaska County. When he was 71 years old, he retired from farming and hauling livestock. He was a member of the Teamsters local union 90. He was an avid hunter, and especially enjoyed coon hunting with his brother Martin. He also enjoyed visiting, especially telling his grandsons about the old times.

Art's family includes his two sons: Steve (& Cindy) Scholtus of Oskaloosa, and Gus Scholtus of Rose Hill; four grandsons: Josh Scholtus, Justin Scholtus, Cody Scholtus, and Logan Scholtus; a great grand daughter: Carlie Scholtus; three brothers and their wives: Marion and Carol Scholtus of Fremont, Donald and Jean Scholtus of Oskaloosa, and Martin and Kathleen Scholtus of Rose Hill; and a sister and her husband: Arlene and Richard Jenkins of Oskaloosa.

Besides his wife, Art is preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Gerrit Scholtus; 5 sisters: Carrie Hoyt, Adriana Harding, Johanna Van Polen, Irene Lane, and one in infancy.

Funeral services for Art Scholtus will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the White Oak Cemetery, east of Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 10, and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6 - 8 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be given to the New Sharon Care Center.
