The Murray, Iowa News, February 10, 1916?

Sarah C. Shultz was born in Park County, Indiana, March 1, 1844. She lived there till 1852 when she, with her parents, came to Iowa and settled in Mahaska County near Leighton. January 28, 1864, she was united in marriage to Peter G. Butler. In 1871, they moved to Clarke County and settled on a farm about two miles north of Murray where they lived until about 15 years ago, when they moved to Murray where they lived until the time of her death.

To Mrs. Butler it seemed that the joys of motherhood were to be withheld. However, she was not content to live in a childless home. She had a mother's heart that must have children to love. Accordingly, on November 2, 1880 she became the mother of two motherless children, Fred and Mattie Phillips, and provided for them a continuous and happy home. Yet there was room in the hearts and home of Mr. and Mrs. Butler. In 1889 they took a nephew, L. Guy Butler, at the age of fifteen months and gave to him a happy home. Other homelss children have at various times found shelter and comfort in this home so that today there are several who rise up and call Mrs. Butler blessed.

Guy Butler and Mattie (Mrs. McPherson of Truro) were at the bedside constantly and Mr. Phillips of Chicago came home for a few days during her worst illness.

Mrs. Butler united with the Presbyterian Church in 1868 at Olivet in Mahaska County, Iowa. In 1893 she united with the M.E. Church of Murray and has remained a faithful member of the same.

Mrs. Butler has been a lover of young people. Her home for years has been a social center. Young people have come and gone, enjoying the hospitality there offered.

For more than 25 years, Mrs. Butler has been afflicted with disease and disorder that finally ended her long and useful life. She has reared her family and maintained a helpful interest in her neighbors. In spite of hardships, all would not have overcome. The joy of a wedded life of over 52 years was given Mrs. Butler. Friends and relatives gathered two years ago the 28th of last month to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary. It was a time of joy for all.

In gentle sleep Mrs. Butler laid the joys and cares of the burdens of a pain racked body down and with a quiet confidence.

She leaves to sorrow for her: husband, a brother J.H. Shultz and a sister, Mrs. A.J. Wilson, both of New Virginia. A sister, Mrs. C.M. Van Rossum of Truro.

Her children, Guy Butler, Mattie McPherson of Truro, Fred Phillips of Chicago and a community of friends and neighbors.

Those in attendace at the funeral were: Mr. J. Wilson, J.H. Shultz, both of New Virginia; Mr. and Mrs. F. Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. D.W.McPherson, Flether and Edith, Z.F. Phillips, all of Truro; Frank Butler, Martinsville, Missouri; Mrs. Nichols, DesMoines; John Butler, Leighton; Fred Ameanda and Phoebe Oswandel of Oskaloosa; F.P.
