Oskaloosa, IA(VIOLA) MAE RUBY
(Viola) Mae Ruby, 92, of New Sharon, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. She was born May 23, 1919, the daughter of Oliver and Bertha Small Mason near Rose Hill. She graduated from Lacey High School with the class of 1937. Following school she worked at The Leader in Oskaloosa for a couple years. On December 14, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lawrence C. Ruby in Kirksville, Missouri, and he died January 11, 1995. Following marriage she stayed home to help Lawrence on the farm and to raise her family. She was a very devoted mother and a very hard worker. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, embroidery, gardening and baking pies. She also enjoyed making scrapbooks for her family members which created a detailed timeline of their lives.
She is survived by her son: Randy (& Merilee) Ruby of rural New Sharon; a daughter-in-law: Cindy (& Fred) Bridges of Oskaloosa; 3 granddaughters: Roxann Patton (Roxie's daughter), Lori (& Daniel) Steffensmeier and Lacey (& Brant) Ruby-Bollman; a grandson: John Ruby; 4 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Wanda Robertson and Ivalene (& David) Robbins both of Oskaloosa and Nancy (& Larry) Doonan of Barnes City; a brother: Earnest Mason of Oskaloosa; a sister-in-law: Grace Mason of New Sharon and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son: Roxie Ruby; 5 brothers: William, Oren, Norman, Walter and Paul Mason; 3 sisters: Wilma Sanders, Ina Cox and Edith Kinney; and two half sisters: Helen Garman and Allene Morris.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend David Pinkerton officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Friday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present at the funeral chapel Friday from 6-8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
