OSKALOOSA - Vernon D. Smithart, 71, of Oskaloosa, died May 29, 2004, at Mahaska Hospital, Oskaloosa.
He was born March 25, 1933 at Oskaloosa, to Eber Guy and Dolly Baxter Smithart. He married Phyllis S. Blotkamp Dec. 31, 1951, in Tempe, Ariz. She survives.
He graduated from Oskaloosa High School, and served in the U.S. Air Force four years. He attended William Penn College two years and was a pharmaceutical salesman 15 years. He later owned and operated Smithart TV in Oskaloosa for many years, and also was freight manager for Home Interiors and Gifts, retiring in 1989. He moved to Branson, Mo., in 1990 and worked at a plumbing supply store, before returning to Oskaloosa in 1995. He worked part-time for his son's business, Mike's TV in Ottumwa. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Oskaloosa, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Smithart of Oskaloosa; a son Michael Smithart of Ottumwa; a daughter Kelly Holmberg of Oskaloosa; 6 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son: Kenneth; a daughter, Cynthia; a brother: Raymond Smithart; and 2 sisters: Evelyn Allison and Ethel Wheeler.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at St. Mary's Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Robert J. Busher officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Visitation begins after 10 a.m. today at Bates Funeral Chapel. Family visitation is 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church or the American Cancer Society.
