EDDYVILLE — Mary Alyce McSparen, 79, of Eddyville died at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at her home.

She was born March 12, 1932, in Davis County, Iowa, to Emmet and Jessie Cabaugh Hewitt. She married Charles F. McSparen on Aug. 2, 1952. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1990.

A homemaker most of her life, she had worked for a short time at the Pink Pig and at John Morrell and Co. She also worked 10 years at Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed flea markets, gardening and bird watching. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Surviving are seven children, Charles Mark McSparen of Unionville, Rocky (Deb) McSparen of Bloomfield, Alan (Kim) McSparen of Unionville, Mary Dawn (Curtis) Highland of Monroe, Tonya (Craig) Steel of Eddyville, Trisha (Mark McDougall) Garman of Oskaloosa and Lisa (Howard) Sterling of Eddyville; 18 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; two brothers, Keith (Cathy) Hewitt of Bloomfield and Charles (Kathy) Hewitt of Monroe; three sisters, Lucille (Junior) Hootman of Floris, Virginia Ashmore of Ottumwa and Janice (Francis) Sullivan of Newton.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Flavena Mallory and Eloise Hewitt; six brothers, Arlo, Roscoe, Donald, Elwood, Rex and Cecil Hewitt.
A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 28, at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the Rev. Lois Williams officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Corners Cemetery near Eddyville. Visitation was on Sunday at the funeral home with the family present. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mahaska County. ~ The Newton Daily News; Monday, November 28, 2011
