Gladys I. Howells, 73, of University Park, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston. She was born April 7, 1930 in Mahaska County, Iowa, near Wright, the daughter of Fred and Elsie Allsup Parlet. She lived in the Mahaska County area her entire life, graduating from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1949. On June 21, 1954, Gladys was united in marriage to Melvin D. Howells at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. In January, 1964, they welcomed their only child, Tammy. She began working for Iowa Trust and Savings Bank, now First National Bank Midwest, after high school graduation, and remained there until she retired as head teller in 1993. She truly enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of many co-workers and regular customers she had the good fortune to know over the years. Gladys was an avid bowler for many years, and enjoyed golfing, doing lawn work, tending her flowers, being in the sun, watching sporting events on TV, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. She was an animal lover, especially dogs. One of Gladys' constant companions while she was ill was her family's cockapoo, Sophie.

Gladys is survived by her husband of over 49 years, Melvin Howells of University Park; her daughter and son in law: Tammy and Ron McGee, Jr. of Des Moines; 2 granddaughters: Ashley,16 and Madison, 10 of Des Moines; a sister and her husband: Phyllis and John W. Eveland of Oskaloosa; a sister in law: Genevieve Parlet of Goose Creek, S.C.; her special cousins: Don and Betty Parlet of Oskaloosa; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Kenneth and Max Parlet; and a sister in law: Alice Parlet.

Funeral services for Gladys Howells will be held Friday, September 26, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Doug Smiley officiating, assisted by the Rev. Floyd Cooper. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin at the funeral chapel on Thursday after 11 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 6 ? 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice (5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131).

Gladys' family would like to thank everyone for the cards, flowers, food, personal visits, and phone calls she and her family have received after her diagnosis of cancer; and especially to the wonderful people of Mercy Hospice. They feel blessed to know so many caring individuals.
