Omer D. Fleck

OSKALOOSA – Omer D. Fleck, 92, of Oskaloosa died Aug 27, 2007, at the Pella Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ebenezer Reformed Church remodeling fund at Leighton.

Omer was born at the Fleck homestead at Leighton on Dec. 9, 1914, to LeRoy and Nellie Ioa (Cruzen) Fleck. On Jan. 7, 1939, he married Iola Dale Van Steenis at Nashua. For 25 years Omer farmed the Fleck homestead. In 1970, Omer and Iola felt called to enter inner city mission work and they moved to Kalamazoo, Mich., where, together they served the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission for 13 years after which, they moved to Oskaloosa to
Retire. However, Omer was always active and he continued to do volunteer work for the church he loved until his death. The Ebenezer Reformed Church always remained an integral part of his life, the church he joined in 1947. Omer was a member of the sons of the Revolution and an honorary member of the International Gospel Mission.

Omer spent his last few months at the Hilltop Manor in Pella, where he had moved to be closer to his wife, an Alzheimer’s patient at the Pella regional Health Center.

He is survived by his wife, Iola; his daughter, Ruth Diann Rutter of Kellogg; his son, Dale Eugene Rutter of Helena, Mont.; two grandchildren, Michael (Jessica) Rutter and Michelle (Brent) Den Hartog; four great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Brandon, Micaela, and Kinley; two brothers, Ivan (Twyla) Fleck and Ray (Irene) Fleck; and one sister Rose Ella Phillips.

Omer was preceded in death by two sisters, Verla Mae Shilling and Dorothy Maxine Wyscarver and his son-in-law, James T. Rutter. ~ Newspaper unknown, possibly The Des Moines (IA) Register or The Newton (IA) Daily News, Wed 29 Aug 2007.
