PHILANA A. BALTZLE

BALTZLE--Died, at her home near New Sharon, October 14, 1888, of cancer of stomach, Philana A., wife of J.C. Baltzle in the 47th year of her age.

The deceased was the daughter of William and Martha Shaw, and was born near La Fayette, Indiana, April 7, 1842. When but a few years of age she came to Mahaska County with her father, settling on the old homestead near Oskaloosa where she continued to reside until her marriage with the husband of her choice, April 19, 1870.

Two children were born to them, Franklin W. and Mary P., aged respectfully, seventeen and seven years. With the exceptions of a residence of one year in Poweshiek County, and three years with Father Shaw near Lacey, they have continued to lived and build up their home in the present location 2-1/2 miles southwest of New Sharon.

Mrs. Baltzle was a woman who looked well to the ways of her household and watched with tender care the welfare of her children in all forms the name of mother implies, ever ready to lend a helping hand to her friends, and the stranger was never turned away hungry from her door.

While young she identified herself with the Methodist Church; but in the last few years poor health forbade her attending as much as was her want. In her last sickness she suffered a great deal, yet she was conscious to the last moments, asking that her little daughter, Mary, might be placed where she could see her, remarking that she looked neat and clean.

Dear Sister thou hast gone before
We know the guiding star,
That leads you to the pearly gate
That always stands a jar.
For those, who in their time of life,
While waiting, watch and pray,
Trusting in the hands of Him
Who said, "I am the Way."
JAMES M.W. (James M. Wroughton, her brother-in-law.)
