John Lester Butler

John Lester BUTLER, the oldest son of John and Nancy BUTLER, was born on a farm in Scott township of Mahaska county on June 17, 1878. He pased away following a brief illness at his home at 910 C avenue east, Septebmer 16, 1942, being 64 years, 2 months and 29 days of age at the time of his death.
On March 23, 1902, he was married to Arminta Phillips to which union two daughters were born, Mrs. Ray Brooks of Oelwein and Mrs. Chester Chase of Oskaloosa. He is also survived by one brother, Ralph of Oskaloosa and four grandchildren.
Mr. Butler lived his entire life here in Mahaska county, and has always been active in the affairs of the community.
As a youger man he was a rural mail carrier, a job which awakened in him an interst in the improvement of the raods. He was one of the original champions of good roads, and through the years he ha continued to advocate better roads. He was also interested in the Southern Iowa Fair and boosted for it with ev- cern about helping the fellow erything he had.
FEw men have been more con- that was down and out than Lester Butler. And no one will probably ever know the number of times he has been called to sit as the arbitor in disputes and arguments that have arisen among neighbors and friends. His good judgment and his fine sense of fairness prompted men to trust him and be satisfied with his decisions.
He loved his home and his family and his friends. He never made a fortune, but his life was worth a fortune to the community in which he lived and to the large group of friends who mourn his untimely death.
Funeral services at Wilcox-Garland chapel. Rev. Edar L. Knight in charge. Interment in Forest cemetery.
