Lewis Ray Jolley, 83, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa. He was born August 12, 1920 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Nell Ray Jolley. He graduated from the Adel High School with the class of 1940. He then attended Drake University for one year. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army serving as a draftsman, and was medically discharged in 1944. He graduated from the St. Louis School of Mortuary Science, and served his internship at the James Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa. On December 10, 1940, Ray was married to Joy Bates in Grinnell. In 1954 they moved to Oskaloosa from Grinnell to work for John Newman at the Newman Funeral Home until 1957. He then worked for Job Service of Iowa in offices in Oskaloosa, Albia, and Newton, working as an interviewer and manager, before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Newton American Legion Post No. 111 and the Oskaloosa American Legion Post No. 34.

Ray is survived by his former wife: Joy Jolley of Oskaloosa, former son in law: Bob Barnhouse, Jr., and a special friend: William Platt of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Barbara Anne Jolley Koogler, his parents, and a special friend: Frank Underwood.

Graveside services for Ray Jolley will be held Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the St. Mary's Cemetery in Oskaloosa at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Crouch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Oskaloosa with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation will begin after 10 a.m. Monday at the Bates Funeral Chapel, and the family will be present Tuesday morning 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. when a procession to the cemetery will form. Memorials may be made to the Stephen's Memorial Animal Shelter.
