Mahaska Veteran Dead

John E. Wells, Old Time Resident of Soldiers’ Home, Succumbs.

Death at 9:25 this morning claimed John E. Wells, age 78 one of the oldest members of the soldiers home and father of Mrs. I. E. Hubler, of this city. Mr. Wells had been at the home since April 20, 1888, when he entered from Indianapolis, Mahaska county. He was a native of Kentucky, having been born in Frankfort, June 16, 1836. On Aug. 25, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, First Kentucky cavalry, in Madison county, Kentucky and was discharged May 9, 1862 at Nashville, Tenn..

Mr. Wells is survived by six children. In addition to Mrs. Hubler, they are: Mrs. Ezra Johnson, San Diego, California; Mrs. Anna McMullen and Leroy Wells, What Cheer; Henry Wells, Indianapolis, Ind. and J. L. Wells of Los Angeles, California. Another son William, died at Indianapolis, Indiana, two years ago. Mr. Wells had been a member of the Baptist church since 1884.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon from the assembly hall, Chaplain H. O. Pratt officiating. Burial will be in the soldiers’ home cemetery.

Note: John was a resident of the Iowa Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Burial was at the Soldiers Home cemetery in Marshalltown.
