John Earl CARTER, better known as "Sharkey", died suddenly Monday evening, Aug. 18 at his home in Fremont while assisting with the mowing in the yard. He was 80 years of age, and had lived in the Fremont community for 38 years. He operated the pool hall in Hedrick several years ago.

The son of Chas. Edward and Josephine STEARNS CARTER, he was born May 13, 1889 at Bladensburg. He grew up in that vicinity, and operated a garage in Reasoner for several years before moving to Fremont. He had been engaged in farming, had owned the Fremont Hotel for about 20 years, operating it himself part of that time. He had been engaged in work for the government at the Ottumwa airbase, and on the various landing strips in the surrounding area during World War II. He was self-employed as a carpenter, was marshal and street commissioner at Fremont for a number of years, and retired from the pool hall at Hedrick about four years ago.

He was married to Eva Opal WOOD on July 9, 1931 at Lancaster, Missouri. She survives, as well as two daughters, Winivere WILHITE of Fremont and Mrs. Robert (Sue) HESLER of Ottumwa; two sons, Bob at Cedar and John Edward at home. Also four grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Cecil GARWOOD of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be Thursday at the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Rev. James KING in charge. Burial will be in the Cedar Township Memorial cemetery at Fremont.
