A CONSTABLE SHOT

Oskaloosa, Iowa, Jan. 4th. – Constable John Ruggerberg was fatally wounded this morning in attempting to make an arrest. The fatal shot is a direct result of the riot between whites and Negros that took place at Evans last night, though at that time no one was seriously injured.

Constable Ruggerberg was shot by the accidental discharge of his own revolver in a struggle while attempted to arrest 12 of a party who indulged for a free for all fight last night that did not end until all participants were unconscious from wounds or helpless from exhaustion.
