Alex Dunlap was born in West Salem, Wayne county, Ohio, Jan. 13, 1841 and died at his home here on March 1, 1922.
When a boy of 11, his parents died, leaving him dependent upon an uncle, with whom he lived until 1859. He then came to Iowa, spending a year in this and neighboring states. In 1860, he went by steamship, via Panama, to California, where he remained six years. Returning to his boyhood home for a few months' visit, he again came to Iowa in 1867. In 1868 he was married to Miss Nannie Kale, daughter of Reuben Kale. In 1873, they went to Amador county, California, where they remained until 1886, when they returned to Madison county, where they have since lived.
To Mr. and Mrs. Dunlap were born five girls, four of whom are still living, and though their homes are widely scattered, all were present at the time of his death. Mr. Dunlap has been a member of the Masonic order since 1867, also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and A.O.U.W.
In 1896 he was elected supervisor in Madison county and re-elected in 1898, thus serving two terms. He was an active farmer until five years ago, when he sold the farm and moved to Winterset, where they have since made their home.
While Mr. Dunlap never became a member of any religious denomination, he was a regular and faithful attendant at the First Methodist Church.
He was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, 4 children, 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist church by Rev. Jackson Giddens and burial services conducted by the A.F. & A.M. and the body laid to rest in Winterset Cemetery.

He then came to Iowa spending a year in this and neighboring states. In April 1860 he went by steamship via Panama to California, where he resided six years. Returning to his boyhood home for a few month’s visit, he again came to Iowa in 1867.
In 1868 he was married to Miss Nannie Kale, daughter of Ruben Kale. In 1873 they want to Amader county, California, where remained until 1886, when they returned to Madison county where I have lived since.

Mr. Dunlap has been a member of the Masonic order since 1867, and also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and A. O. U. W.
As he was brought up amidst stern surroundings his education was neglected, his only privilege being three months attendance at school in a year. He, however, overcame all obstacles, and determined upon a course of study for himself. His diligence and energy enable him to master the elementary branches, thus preparing him for life’s duties.
He was an active citizen in every community where he lived, being a staunch republican in politics. While in Amader county, California, he served as postmaster under Hayes, Garfield, and Arthur’s administrations. In 1896 he was elected supervisor in Madison county and was reelected in 1898, thus serving two terms. He was an active farmer until five years ago when he sold the farm and moved to Winterset where they have since made their home.
While Mr. Dunlap never became a member of any religious denomination he was a regular and faithful attendant at the First Methodist church, and during the Passion week services a year ago with his stand with the Christian people and expressed his hope of a better life in the world beyond. He was the last surviving member of a family of eleven children.
He leaves to mourn his death which occurred on March 1, 1922, the wife, four children, 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist church by Rev. Jackson Giddens, Pastor, and burial services conducted by the A. F. A. M. and the body laid to rest in the Cemetery.
