Darrel Wayne Wildin was born south of Patterson in Madison County, Iowa on June 4, 1923, the son of J. Irvin and Jennie (Stevens) Wildin. He was the youngest of nine children. He graduated from Patterson High School in 1940, and then was united in marriage to Shirley Potter on August 20, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri.

Darrel was born and lived all his life on the farm south of Patterson. After retiring from farming, he moved to Winterset, and spent the winters in Sun City, Arizona. He was a member of the Patterson United Methodist Church, a Farm Bureau member and was a 4-H leader.

He enjoyed time bowling, square dancing, and hunting. He loved times camping with his family and taught them how to make homemade hot air balloons. In the winter months, he kept busy woodcarving. He collected paperweights after he received one as a gift, and at last count he had around 125. He loved fishing, not only on ponds but going to Canada with his brothers and brothers-in-law. He was an avid NASCAR fan and liked watching Jimmy Johnson.

He had never golfed until he took it up while wintering in Arizona at the age of 70. He had two holes-in-one and everyone was amazed since his eyesight was bad and he needed help to see where the pins were. Above all else, he loved his church and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Irvin and Jennie (Stevens) Wildin; his wife, Shirley (Potter), in 2018; brothers, Edward, Lewis, and Clarence; sisters, Irma Harpole, Vern Klein, Zelda Buck, Gertrude Hudson, and Phyllis Pace; granddaughter, Michelle Carley; great-grandson, Anthony Gordon; and daughter-in-law, Bethene Wildin.

Darrel is survived by his sons, Doug (Paula) Wildin of Winterset and Gary Wildin of Castle Rock, CO; daughters, Charlotte (Norman “Butch”) Gordon of Winterset and Jill (Jeff) Brammer of Des Moines; 8 grandchildren, Kevin (Amy) Gordon, Keith (Shawn) Gordon, Bradley (Amy) Alles, Daniel Wildin, Melissa (Greg) Shahan, Tosha Wilkinson, Jason Wildin, and Shana (Rodney) Oxford; 15 great-grandchildren, Michael (Allison) Gordon, Gavin (Lexi) Gordon, Justin (Lauren) Alles, Joshua Alles, Cameron Alles, Nicholas (Lauren) Carley, Noah Carley, Reed Wilkinson, Paeton Wildin, Nichole Oxford, Kyle Oxford, Taylor Shahan, Molly Shahan, Joe (Jessica) Carley, and Chris (Catherine) Carley; and 3 great-great-grandchildren, Reagan Gordon, Noah Gordon and Isabella Gordon.
