DEATH TAKES NONAGENARIAN

Mrs. Martha Shull, 93 Years Old, Came To Iowa 66 Years Ago – One Of Sioux City’s Oldest Women, Former Winterset Resident

Mrs. Martha A. Shull, mother of D. C. Shull, prominent Sioux City attorney, died of senility Thursday, September 17, at the home of her son. Death following an illness of about six months. Mrs. Shull was 93 years old, and one of the oldest women in Sioux City.

Mrs. Shull and her husband, Jacob Henry Shull, where the oldest married couple in Sioux City. On March 12, 1925, they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Shull had resided in Sioux City for six years, going there with Mr. Shull from Des Moines, where they had lived since 1885. She was born at Holland, New York, March 28, 1832, and was married to Mr. Shull at Carthage, Illinois, March 12, 1856.

In 1859 Mr. and Mrs. Shull moved to Iowa from Carthage, and settled at Pella. After the Civil War, in which Mr. Shull served, they moved to a farm near Winterset, and resided until 1885, when they moved to Des Moines. Since moving to Sioux City had resided at the home of their son.

Mrs. Shull was a member of the First Baptist church. Her husband, and her son are her only survivors. D. C. Shull is the surviving child of four children.

The funeral was held Friday, September 18, at 2 o’clock, in the D. C. Shull residence. The services were private, Rev. Louis Jackobson, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating.

The body was entombed in the Shull crypt in the Graceland Park cemetery mausoleum. The crypt contained the body of Mrs. Shull’s grandson, Lieutenant Laurens C. Shull, who died from wounds received during the world war in France, his body recently was returned from Europe for burial in Sioux City. - Sioux City Journal
