Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, July 10, at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset, Iowa with Pastor Mike Albert officiating. Burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery at Madison County, Iowa.

Art Brown, the youngest child of Samuel G. and Alice Brown, was born April 15, 1919 and passed away July 6, 2017. Being the youngest of a ‘Baker’s Dozen’, Art was no doubt teased, tormented, and pampered. ‘If he was spoiled, he outgrew it’, said his sister, Florence Fairholm.

Art attended Patterson Consolidated School. The main sports were baseball and basketball. Being a good athlete, he participated in both. Baseball was probably his favorite sport. He played centerfield and pitcher. He was known for his ability to hit home runs. The boys on the baseball team looked up to the 1934 St. Louis Cardinal’s and gave each other names after the famous Cardinal teammates. Art’s nickname was, ‘Dizzy Dean’

Art graduated high school in 1937. Since his father had died, he stayed home to take care of the farm. To earn extra money, he also drove a school bus. Later, his occupations have included driving a truck, carpentry, perma-stone siding, running the Patterson Oil Station, and plastering. In 1955, Art began working on the night shift building tires for Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company. He retired at the age of 62.

Art married Sarah Overturf in 1944. They had four children. Sarah died of a heart attack in 1961. In 1965, he married Lucile Mc Kee and became a step-father to three more children.

His hobbies included coon-hunting, riding mules, and pitching horseshoes. He was a member of the Madison County Coon and Mule Association and the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitching Association. Art rode mules until the age of 86 years.

He has pitched horseshoes throughout the state of Iowa. He competed at the Madison County Fair and the Iowa State Fair for many years. In 1965, he placed fifth in the Class A at the Iowa State Fair, was Senior State Champion in 1983, and first place in Class C at the Iowa State Fair in 1992. He finally decided to hang up his horseshoes at age 85. He won over 70 trophies for his various achievements.

Art is survived by his wife, Lucile Brown of Patterson; children, Dennis (companion, Sally) Brown of Eldora, Diana Pickering of Winterset, and Gary (Pam) Brown of Winterset; stepchildren, Jim (Cathy) Garrett of Indianola, Gary (Deana) Garrett of Peru, and DeLynn (Rick) Beverlin of Des Moines; many grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Elizabeth Brown; parents, Sam and Alice (Barber) Brown; son, Samuel Glen Brown; son-in-law, Marvin Pickering; twelve siblings; and granddaughter, Rae Lynn Donham.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 6 PM at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 3 to 5 PM. Memorials may be given to his family for a future designation.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
