Ed Nicholson, 89, of Winterset, died Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 27, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. A visitation will be held from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 28, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where family will be present to receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church and online condolences may be left for the family at ochiltree.com.

Edward Joseph Nicholson, son of Ray and Mary (Johnson) Nicholson, was born January 20, 1926 in Scranton, Iowa. He was a 1944 graduate of Scranton High School. He is a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy, assigned to U.S. Navy Ship USS Estes. His military journey started at Great Lakes, Illinois. From there he was stationed in San Diego, California and assigned to Commander Amphibious Group 13, which was part of the Liberatide of the Phillipines. This Group 13 arrived in Shanghai, China and waited for a task force to assemble land troops to move on Japan. He was discharged with the rank of Yeoman Third Class in Norfolk, Virginia and returned to Scranton, Iowa, where he worked in a produce station.

Edward was united in marriage with Delores Soppe on April 21, 1951 at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic church in Carroll, Iowa. Edward and Delores moved to Yale, Iowa where he owned and operated a produce and feed company and laundromat. They later moved to Winterset, Iowa where he managed a propane and natural gas company. Ed and Delores also owned and operated the local Dairy Sweet. Later Edward sold life and health insurance. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the American Legion Post # 184. Ed was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed traveling and cherished nothing more than the time he was able to spend with his beloved family.

Edward is survived by his wife of 64 years, Delores Nicholson of Winterset; children, Sandra Nicholson of Ames, Kevin (Janelle) Nicholson of Ottumwa, Kathy (Greg) Clausen of Waukee, Brenda (Myles) Easter of Indianola, Michele (Rob) Fitzharris of Coralville; eleven grandchildren: Nathan (Amy) Nicholson, Jennifer Nicholson, Kyle Nicholson; Rachel Clausen, Reid Clausen, Ross Clausen, Myles Easter, Zac Easter, Levi Easter, Cole Fitzharris, Courtney Fitzharris; two great-grandchildren Luke Nicholson and Carly Nicholson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald in infancy; grandson, Kevin Nicholson Jr.; brother, Lindzey Nicholson; and sister, Edna Rush.
