Minnie Matilda Jacobs was born at Fort Dodge, Iowa, April 24, 1863, and departed this life December 27, 1928, at the family home northeast of Barney, aged 65 years, 7 months and 29 days. Death came suddenly and unexpectedly, yet she must have known, for on Saturday night she said to her pastor, "I won't live long" and just before her spirit left her, she said to her daughter, "Miss Edith, Pray for me, for my time has come."
Mrs. Bowles was on of a family of 9 children, 4 of whom survive, and with Miss Edith, are left to mourn. The sisters and brothers are: Mrs. Rose Bettin, of Dunnell, Minnesota; Mrs. Alice Bennett, of Lubbock; Texas; Edward Jacobs, of Mt. Ayr; and Louis Jacobs, of Barney. Lyman Barker, a nephew of George Ferguson, has made his home with the Bowles family for twenty years. Mrs. Bowles loved him as a son, and he loved her as a mother.
June 5, 1881, Minnie Matilda Jacobs was united in marriage to George W. Bowles at Ankeny. They lived there only a short time, moving to Barney, where she lived for years, he having answered the summons from on high 20 years ago. Besides Miss Edith, twin girls were born in this home, but they died in infancy.
The Bowles home was above the ordinary, there was so much love and tenderness. His own folks spoke often so highly of Mrs. Bowles. Her friends remember her hospitality and anxiety for all of them. Miss Edith has taught her home school for several years. She is very successful. Many of her pupils have merit awards. She has been able to do so largely because her home environment was such that it was easy for her to do and give her best. Her mother rejoiced in her success and was as much pleased as Miss Edith. Ms. Bowles too loved Edith, she was his ideal. This too has had no small part in her doing her best. Mrs. Bowles is gone, but her deeds will live forever.
Many relatives and friends were present at the funeral which was held December 25, conducted by R. V. Hughes, pastor. Interment was in the Barney cemetery.
