Death of George W. Woods

Madison county lost another of their pioneer residents Friday, November 9th, when George W. Woods died at this home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Ryner, in Union township. Mr. Woods had been in poor health for several years and was confined to his bed for the past ten weeks. The deceased was 78 years of age, being born August 18, 1850, at Atalissa, in Muscatine county. He, with his parents, moved to Brooklyn, in Poweshiek county, in 1864, and they made this community their home in 1875. That year he was married to Martha Whitt and they moved to Madison county, where they have since resided. Mrs. Woods died February 25, 1917.

Mr. Woods was a member of the United Brethren church in Jefferson township, and the pastor conducted the funeral services at the Ryner home, Sunday Novebmer 11th, at 2 o’clock. Burial was made in the Jefferson township cemetery.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters: Nelson, of San Bernardino, California; Austin, of Penn township; Edith Ryner, of Union township; Miss harriet, of Winterset. He also leaves eight grandchildren and four sisters, Mrs. Bell Crawford, of Brooklyn; Mrs. H. C. Mulford and Mrs. Mary Wright, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. G. W. Hawkins, of Montezuma.

George Winfield Woods, son of Joseph and Ellen Woods was born August 18, 1850, at Atalissa, Muscatine county, Iowa. He with his parents moved to Brooklyn, Poweshiek county, Iowa, in 1864, where he lived until 1875. He was married in that year to Martha A. Whitt and moved to Madison county, where he has since resided. His wife died February 26, 1917.

He had been in poor health for several years, and was confined to his bed for the past ten weeks. He was a member of the United Brethren church in Jefferson township.

He leaves to mourn his loss, two sons and two daughters: Nelson of San Bernardino, California; Austin of Penn township; Edith Ryner of Union township and Harriet of Winterset; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Bell Crawford of Brooklyn, Iowa; Mrs. H. C. Mulford, and Mrs. Mary Wright of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Mrs. G. W. Hawkins of Montezuma, Iowa and many friends.

It may be said of him that he showed his love for God by loving his fellow man.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 11, 2 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Ryner, Union township where he had made his home for several years. Interment in Jefferson cemetery.

Relatives from a distance who came to attend the funeral were: Mrs. G. W. Hawkins of Montezuma; Mr. and Mrs. Simpson Morrison of Brooklyn and Mrs. Ed Keene of Butte, Montana.
