Death of William Seerley

William Seerley, an old and respected citizen of Madison township, died Saturday night and the funeral services were held at Worthington church Monday. Mr. Seerley was of Huguenot parentage and removed from Indiana to Madison township in this county which has been his home since 1855.

He was about eighty-five years old and leaves a family of ten children, seven o whom still remain at the parental home. Three are married and one resides in Adair county, this state, while others live in other states. One of Mr. Seerley's nephews is president of the State Normal school and another represented the first congressional district in congress some years ago.

Mr. Seerley was a quiet reserved man, of rugged honesty and a model citizen. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the funeral sermon was preached by the pastor of that church of Earlham. The funeral was largely attended by the people of Madison township and from Winterset.

William Seerley was born May 5, 1823, in Fredrick county, Md. He died April 4, 1908, at his home near Earlham, Ia., being 84 years and 11 months old. Was married to Miss Mary Missersmith of Centerville, Indiana in 1852. To this union was born 14 children, 10 of whom survive their father.

Mr. Seerley was six months old when his parents moved to Pennsylvania, and at the time of their settlement in Marion county, Indiana, was 13 years of age. His boyhood days were spent in the district school and on the farm, and his education was completed in the Seminary at Indianapolis.

He united with the English Luthern church at the age of 18, and remained a faithful member of that church until he moved to Madison county, in 1856, where he identified himself with the Presbyterian church of Earlham.

Mr. Seerley was the last of the family of brothers and sisters to depart this life.

He was a kind neighbor, a loving husband and father and a true friend to those who were in trouble. The sympathy of the entire neighborhood goes out to the stricken wife, three daughters and seven sons of his family, who are left to mourn his loss.

Funeral service was held Monday morning in Worthington church, conducted by Rev. Bethel. Interment was in Worthington cemetery.

Another Pioneer Passes Away

Wm. Searley, of Madison township, died at his home last Saturday. The funeral was held Monday at Worthington church. Mr. Searley was one of Madison county’s most highly respected farmers, coming here in 1856 from Indiana and settled in Madison township, where he has lived for fifty-two years. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family.
