Thomas H. Wood, age 83 died suddenly in Gilbert, AZ on December 4, 2007.

Joint funeral services with his sister-in-law Marianna Ledlie of Earlham will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham, where the family will greet friends from noon until service time. Burial will follow in the Earlham Cemetery.

Tom was a florist and an engineer for many years, however was self employed most of his working career.

Tom is survived by his children: Tom Jr. and wife Charlotte of Des Moines; daughter Rebecca Schmeiser of Salt Lake City, UT; son James Wood and wife Jackie of Des Moines; daughter Elizabeth Goetz and husband Bruce of Gilbert, AZ; daughter Margaret Simmons and husband Jerry of Knoxville; three sisters; nieces Barb Meir and Jan Hensiek of Blue Eye, MO; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Thomas Harrison Wood, 83, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007 at the home of his daughter in Gilbert, Ariz.

Services were held Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007 at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor Linda Burnett officiating. Special music by Charlotte Church included “Just Wave Hello” and “The Last Rose of Summer.”

Bearers were John Steingrabe, Joseph Naylor, Stephen Raba, Tim Taylor, Daniel Olsasky, and Brandon Goetz.

Interment was in Earlham Cemetery, Earlham.

Thomas H. Wood was born the son of Thomas an Margaret (Eckard) Wood in Nevada on Feb. 14, 1924.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II, and served in the Battle of the Bulge. Tom and Opal Ledlie were married on June 27, 1948. This union was blessed with five children: Tom Jr., Becky, Jim, Betsy, and Peggy.

Tom was a maintenance engineer, as well as a self-employed entrepreneur. He was an avid golfer, loved fishing, old movies, bird watching, and Vanna and the “Wheel of Fortune.”

Tom had a soft spot of others in need. Over the years, he and Opal took into their home many young people through the foster children’s program during the 1970’s. Tom and Opal visited many of the lower states as well as Alaska on two occasions. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 27, 1998.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Opal in 1999, and several siblings.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas and Charlotte Wood and James and Jackie Wood, all of Des Moines; three daughters, Rebecca Schmeiser of Salt Lake City, Utah, Elizabeth and Bruce Goetz of Gilbert, Ariz., and Margaret and Jerry Simmons of Knoxville; a sister-in-law, Marianna Ledlie of Earlham, two nieces; three sisters; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham, and Redfield was in charge of arrangements.
