Funeral services for Emma M. Compton were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the First Presbyterian Church in Earlham. Mrs. Compton died Sunday, Feb. 11, at Bethesda Care Center in Winterset, where she was a resident, of a heart condition at the age of 90.

Rev. Stewart Brooks officiated at the service, and music was provided by Cecil Van Houten, organist.

Pallbearers were Sam Braland, Harold Jensen, Leslie Secrest, John Godby, Jack DeLay and Burton Paullin. Burial was at the Earlham Cemetery. McKee Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Magdalena Compton was born in Boone County, Iowa on May 4, 1899, the daughter of Henry and Anna Thomsen.

She spent her youth with her family on farms in Iowa and Texas and attended schools in the communities where she lived.

On Dec. 12, 1923, she married Marion O. Compton of the Earlham community. Emma and Marion farmed east of Earlham for a number of years and then enjoyed their retirement in Earlham.

They became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Earlham. Emma found and gave vitality to her life with her church, home and family. She became a resident of Bethesda Care Center in Winterset after suffering a debilitating stroke five years ago.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marion, two brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Norma Jean Moreland of Earlham; her son, William “Bill” Compton of Portage, Mich.; five grandchildren, Jerry and Danny Moreland and Scott, Steven and Lynn Compton, and five great grandchildren.

On December 12, 1923, she united in marriage with Marion O. Compton of the Earlham community. Emma and Marion farmed east of Earlham for a number of years and then enjoyed their retirement together in Earlham. They became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Earlham. Emma found and gave vitality to her life with her church, home and family.

She is preceded in death by her husband Marion, two brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Norma Jean Moreland of Earlham; her son William (Bill) Compton of Portage, Michigan; five grandchildren, Jerry and Danny Moreland and Scott, Steven and Lynn Compton and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services conducted February 15, 1990 at First Presbyterian Church, Earlham, Iowa with Reverend Stewart Brooks officiating. Cecil Van Houton provided organ music. Pallbearers were Sam Braland, Harold Jensen, Leslie Secrest, John Godby, Jack DeLay and Burton Paullin. Interment was in Earlham cemetery, Earlham, Iowa.
