John N. Tucker was born in West Virginia, April 21, 1844 and died at the home of his daughter in Winterset, June 22, 1920, age 76 years, two months and one day.

He was a member of the 19th West Virginia Cavalry under Col. Lee, and served throughout the war. He was united in marriage to Miss Emma Irvin, Feb. 6, 1879 at Perlee, Iowa. To this union were born seven children, Ira of Macksburg, Jessie of Des Moines, Grant, Mrs. Irene Carey and Charles of Winterset. A pair of twins, who died in infancy, are buried at What Cheer.

The early part of his married life was spent at What Cheer, this being the home for 13 years. In 1894 the family moved to Lorimor and from there to Macksburg in the spring of 1900. In 1915 his wife died and since then he made his home in Des Moines. He had enjoyed exceptionally good health all his life until a few months before his death. Throughout all his illness, he bore his suffering bravely and without complaint, considering the comfort of those about him always before his own. He lived a life of exemplary honesty, held in respect by his neighbors and friends; a man whose heart may fittingly serve for his children to follow. A loving father has been called to his last reward leaving to mourn his loss, five children, six grandchildren, two brothers, one sister and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens of Winterset from the M.E. church at Macksburg; interment being made in the Macksburg cemetery by the side of his faithful wife.
