Many Answer the Final Summons

The week just passed was one of sorrow to several Winterset homes—in fact it is seldom that the messenger of death has entered so many Winterset homes in the same week.

Mention was made last week of the death of Ruth McMillan. Funeral services conducted by Rev. J. S. Corkey, assisted by Rev. A. A. Walburn were held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

At four o’clock of the same day, Johnnie Ratliff Mardis, son of J. C. Mardis of Des Moines and a grandson of the elder Mardis and Ratliff families of this place was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.

On the same day, Henry Joeckel attended the funeral services of his aged mother at Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and on the day following, Mrs. Ollie Smith Lawson, wife of Dr. J. A. Lawson of Rocky Ford, Colorado and sister of J. E. and W. F. Smith of this place, passed away after a long illness.

John Roy, one of the early settlers of the Hooten neighborhood in Lincoln township, also passed away on Friday. More detailed notice of those deceased will be found elsewhere in this paper.

Transcriber's note: Nothing else was found on John Roy in the Madisonian.

John Roy Dead

John Roy, the well known and popular farmer of Lincoln township, died at his home Saturday morning. He had been in ill health for several years. He was one of the best known men in the western part of the county and had lived nearly all his life in the township where he died.

He was the oldest son of Thomas Roy, who died several years ago, and was a brother of ex-sheriff Douglas Roy.

He was a man of substantial means and was thoroughly liked for his bluff and genial ways. The funeral occurred Sunday.
