Page 1John Bruce Dies in Nebraska
John Bruce of Patterson, a brother of Marion Bruce of this place and an early settler of this county, died last Thursday at Alliance, Nebraska. He had been failing in health for a number of years and his death was not unexpected. A short time ago, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce went to South Dakota, hoping that the mineral springs would afford relief. He did not improve and they then went to the home of Mrs. Bruce’s daughter at Alliance, Nebraska, where he passed away on Thursday of last week.
Funeral services under the auspices of the G. A. R. of this place and the Masonic lodge of St. Charles were held on Tuesday of this week and burial made at Blair Chapel.

Page 1Death of John Bruce
John Bruce, one of the old settlers of this county, died at the home of his stepdaughter in Alliance, Nebr., last Thursday September the 15th. Mr. Bruce had been suffering for sometime with kidney trouble and went to Hot Springs, S. Da., for treatment. He was taken worse while there and barely reached the home of his daughter, where his wife met him, when he died. His remains were brought to Patterson and the funeral occurred Tuesday the 20th. Interment was made in the cemetery at Blair Chapel. A number of his old soldier comrades attended the services.
The deceased was 68 years of age. He enlisted in company F of the 4th Iowa infantry and served throughout the war and was honorably discharged. At the time of his death his home was in Patterson where he was in the hotel business. He had no children from the present wife and none living from a first marriage.

John R. Bruce was born Nov. 7, 1841, and died Thursday Sept. 15, 1910 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jennie Miles, 520 Niobrara Ave., Alliance, Nebr. Deceased was sixty-eight years of age and had been in poor health for sometime past. He had recently returned to Alliance from Hot Springs, S. Da., where he had gone in hopes that his health might be benefitted. The remains were shipped to his home in Patterson, Ia., and interment was made in Blair Chapel cemetery on Tuesday, Sept. 20th. The remains were escorted to the depot at Alliance by the Masons, he being a member of that order.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Shafer April 23, 1869. To this union were born two sons, Albert and Charles. His wife and his two sons preceeded him to the spirit world. He was again united in marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Crossley on Dec. 4, 1908. He was a member of Co. F. of the 4th Iowa Infantry. He leaves a wife, one brother, four sisters, three grandchildren, one stepson, R. C. Crossley, and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Eliza Williamson, of Conger, Ia., and Mrs. Jennie M. Miles, of Alliance, Nebr., to mourn his loss. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father. Another vacant chair is in the home.
We shall meet but we shall miss him
There will be a vacant chair,
But we linger to caress him
When we breath our evening prayer.
