Marvin Lee Cummings Jr., 45, of St. Charles, Iowa, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, after being Life Flighted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines as a result of a motorcycle accident outside of St. Charles.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 28, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Burial, with military honors, was in Union Chapel Cemetery in Madison County.
Marvin was born Sept. 7, 1963, in Huntington Beach, Calif., to Marvin and Irva (Conniff) Cummings Sr. He was a 1982 graduate of Stuart-Menlo High School and a graduate of Hamilton Business College. After high school, he joined the United States Navy, serving on the USS Kittyhawk. On May 22, 1999, he married Danielle K. Shoemaker. He grew up in the Stuart-Menlo area, lived in West Des Moines and eventually moved to St. Charles. Marvin was a devoted husband and mainly worked at his ranch in St. Charles. He also worked various jobs — including Wal-Mart in Creston, Kum & Go in Winterset, and previously Qwest in Des Moines and Walgreen in Des Moines (where he met his future wife). He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church (where he had served as a lay minister) and St. Charles Fire & Rescue.
Marvin is survived by his father, Marvin Cummings Sr. of Menlo; his wife, Danielle Cummings of St. Charles; three brothers, Gary Cummings of Adel, Rick Cummings of Menlo, and Martin (Laurie) Cummings of Casey; and a sister, Diane (Steve) Hutchins of Adel. He was preceded in death by his mother, Irva Cummings.
Memorials given to his family will be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church or St. Charles Fire & Rescue.
Funeral arrangements were handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
