Services Held for Vivian Piatt

Mrs. Willard Piatt passed away at the Dexter Clinic May 18, 1960. Funeral rites were held in the Dexter Methodist Church Saturday, May 21 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Williams officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Clell Sellers, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Keith M. Chapler at the organ.

Casket bearers were Jim Berry, Richard Ritter, Wm. Lowery, Morris Boyle, Carl York and Ray Cave. Interment was in the Penn Center cemetery.

Vivian Marguerite Piatt was born in De Soto in Dallas County, Iowa, on June 1, 1894. She passed away at the Dexter Clinic May 18, 1960, at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 17 days. She was the youngest of four daughters born to Albert R. and Anna Hemphill.

She joined the Dexter Methodist church early in life when her family moved to Dexter. Mrs. Allen Percy was her favorite Sunday School teacher. She attended the local schools, graduating in 1912, after which she taught school in Menlo and De Soto.

On October 25, 1916, she was united in marriage with Willard V. Piatt. They lived in the Penn Center neighborhood from 1917 to 1935 where she was active in the WSCS and taught a girls’ Sunday School class for many years. They moved to Dexter April 18, 1960, after living in Des Moines the past 15 years. At the time of her death their letter of transfer back to the Dexter Church had been requested.

She is survived by her husband, Willard, an adopted son, Alvin L. of Spokane, Washington, and four grandchildren, Alvin L., Jr.; Willard, Vivian and Michael. Her daughter-in-law Hazel gave her loving care last summer during an extended illness.

One sister, Stella Goss of Rapid City, South Dakota also survives. Her sisters, Ethel Knox and Blanche Kitt, preceded her in death. She also leaves several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral Services Held Sat., For Mrs. Willard Piatt
Recently Returned to Dexter

Funeral services were held at the Dexter Methodist church at three o’clock Saturday afternoon, May 21 for Mrs. Willard (Vivian) Piatt who passed away at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, after a hospitalization of only two hours. Mrs. Piatt had been in failing health for several years and last summer was very ill for weeks. Her death was the result of a lung and heart condition. Mr. and Mrs. Piatt had moved to Dexter a month ago from their home in Des Moines. Mrs. Piatt was looking forward to the renewal of acquaintance with her Dexter friends. She had lived in Dexter many years during her girlhood graduating from Dexter high school in 1912.

The Rev. Robert Williams officiated at the last rites. Mrs. Keith Chapler was organist. She accompanied Mrs. Clell Sellers as she sang two hymns, “Abide with Me”, and “There’ll Be Peace in the Valley”.

Casketbearers were Jim Berry, Richard Ritter, William Lowery, Morris Boyle, Carl York, and Ray Cave. The ushers were Jim Adkins, sr., and W. N. Curry.

Many beautiful floral offerings graced the church. They were arranged by the Gail Leeper Funeral Home, who were in charge of the service.

The interment was in the Penn Center cemetery.
