Veteran Webster Township Farmer Dies at Age of 85 Years

George W. Huffman, one of the oldest pioneers in Madison county, who had spent all but 10 years of his life in Webster township, died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Haymond in that community. He was 85 years of age.

Mr. Huffman was a life-long resident of Iowa. He was born in Shelby county on April 17, 1854 the son of John and Amanda Huffman. As a boy he came with his parents to this county where he was reared and spent the remainder of his life. In September 1879 he was married to Mary A. Hutchinson at Elizabeth, Pa. They were the parents of three children, two of whom preceded the father in death, followed by the mother, who died in 1882.

On Dec. 16, 1885, he was married to Kathryn Duffield at New Virginia. They were the parents of four children. The second Mrs. Huffman died in 1895.

Two other children also preceded their father in death Everett W. Huffman in 1921 and Mrs. Amanda Roy in 1925.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Klingman and Mrs. Esther Haymond; a son, Walker S. Huffman, all of Winterset; 15 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a brother, John Q. Huffman of Omaha; and a sister, Mrs. Emma Bird of Des Moines.

Obituaries – George W. Huffman

George Washington Huffman was born in Shelby county, Iowa, on April 17, 1854, the son of John and Amanda Huffman. As a boy he came with his parents to Madison county where he grew to manhood. He spent the greater share of 50 years as a farmer living on the place which his son now occupies. However, because of failing health, he had spent the last twenty years at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Haymond. He was one of the oldest pioneers in Madison county, having lived all but ten years of his life and Webster township.

In September, 1879 he was united in marriage to Mary A. Hutchinson at Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. To this union three children were born, to the home preceded him in death, followed by the mother who died on Dec. 25, 1882.

On December, 1885 he was married to Kathryn Duffield at New Virginia, Iowa. Four children blessed his home but 10 years later in 1895 death called the mother. Two other children preceded him in death, Everett Warren Huffman on April 6, 1922 and Mrs. Amanda Huffman Roy on June 8, 1925.

For many years he had been in failing health and on April 8, he departed this life at the home of his daughter at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 21 days.

Those left to mourn his death are two daughters, Mrs. Mary Klingaman and Mrs. Esther Haymond; one son Walker G. Huffman, all of Winterset; 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; also one brother, John Q. Huffman of Omaha, Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs. Emma Bird of Des Moines. Besides these he leaves many friends and relatives.
