JOE COOPER IS KILLED IN CRASH

Motorcycle and Car Crash On Highway 169 Five Miles South of Winterset

Joseph Cooper, a Monroe township farmer, was instantly killed, last Thursday afternoon, November 13th, when a motorcycle collided with the Chevrolet touring car in which he was riding, at what is known as the Baker corner, five miles south of Winterset on highway No. 169. Mr. Cooper, who was 43 years of age, was riding in the back seat of the car, and it is thought that he was killed when the car turned over the first time, and he was thrown on the bank at the side of the road.

The Chevrolet was driven by a brother-in-law of Mr. Cooper, Mr. Garnagin, of Des Moines. The victim’s father, William Cooper, was also in the car at the time of the accident, and the three were on their way to Des Moines. The other two occupants were not seriously hurt and went on to Des Moines later in the afternoon.

The motorcycle was ridden by Don Maltas, of Delmar, and Thad Critchfield, of Creston. It is stated that they were coming from the west on Federal Highway No. 169, and that they did not slow up at the corner. Maltas suffered a compound fracture of the left ankle, which was badly crushed, and he was otherwise bruised. Critchfield escaped with a few slight bruises. They were brought to the Winterset hospital and Mr. Critchfield was released the following day.

Mr. Cooper had always resided in this county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Cooper, and had spent most of his life on a farm southwest of Patterson. He was married to Ocien Gladys Mead, on October 3, 1908, and they were the parents of nine children. Eight of these children, with the mother, survive him: Mrs. May Guess, of Hazen, Nevada; Harold, Alvin, Josephine, Grafe, Wayne, Bellzoras and Emory. He also leaves his father and five sisters and two brothers: Mrs. A. A. Powell and Mrs. Ida Teel, of Winterset; Mrs. Edith Garnagan, of Des Moines; Mrs. Rose Thompson, of Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Stover, of San Antonio, Texas, and Mark, Frank and George, of Des Moines.

The Rev. John T. Hall conducted the funeral services at Tidrick’s funeral home, Sunday, November 16th, at 2 o’clock, and burial was made in the Union chapel cemetery. More details of his life may be found in the mortuary column.

Joseph Cooper

Joseph Cooper, son of William and Lucy Shepherd Cooper, was born in Madison county, November 3, 1887. His boyhood was spent southwest of Patterson.

On October 3, 1908, he was married to Ocien Gladys Mead, and to them were born nine children. One son, Willard, died at the age of two years, and those remaining are Mrs. May Guess, of Hazen, Nevada; Harold, Alvin, Josephine, Grace, Wayne, Bellzora and Emory, all of whom reside at home.

After their marriage they lived on different farms, but most of the time in the Patterson neighborhood, with the exception of one year spent near Polk City. Three years ago last spring, they moved to Monroe township, where they have since made their home.

Mr. Cooper was a good worker, a wonderful father to his children, a good neighbor, but his wife, his children and his home were ever first in his heart. He was strong and in good health when the auto accident, which instantly took his life, occurred on the afternoon of November 13th, at which time he was 43 years of age. Besides the wife and the children already mentioned, he leaves to mourn his loss his father William Cooper; five sisters, Mrs. A. A. Powell, Mrs. Ida Teel, of Winterset; Mrs. Edith Garnagan, of Des Moines; Mrs. Rose Thompson, of Nebraska, and Mrs. Mary Stover, of San Antonio, Texas, and three brothers, Mark, Frank and George, of Des Moines. Besides these he leaves many other relatives and many friends.
