MRS. A. W. JOHNSTON DIES

St. Charles (Special) Nov. 27--

Mrs. A. W. Johnston, 70, passed away Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ray Johnson near New Virginia. She had been an invalid for twenty years, and almost helpless for the larger part of that time, suffering intensely from arthritis and rheumatism in its worst form.

She had lived on the farm, two miles east of St. Charles for many years, and about a year ago was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Johnson where she was tenderly cared for until the end came.

She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Johnson of New Virginia, Mrs. Inez Hart of Grimes, Leah of Oklahoma, and one son, Fred R. Johnston of Texas, and a number of grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church in St. Charles, in charge of Rev. Watson of New Virginia, assisted by Rev. Smith, and interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

Funeral Thursday For Mrs. Johnston

Funeral services for Mrs. Alex W. Johnston who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ray Johnson near New Virginia Monday evening, Nov. 20, were conducted Thursday. The service was held in the Methodist church in St. Charles, conducted by Rev. Watson of New Virginia, assisted by Rev. Lucius L. Smith of St. Charles.

Mrs. Johnston was the former Sallie V. Leftwich and was born in West Virginia nearly 70 years ago. When a small child she came with her parents to Iowa, settling in Warren county. For a few years before her marriage to A. W. Johnston on Feb. 22, 1888, she taught school. Mrs. Johnston had been bedfast for a number of years, suffering from arthritis.

The surviving relatives are her husband; four children, Fred, Bessie, Inez and Leah; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
