Death of Mrs. Rachel Snyder

Mrs. Rachel Snyder, who with her brother, George Blair of Afton were the last members of the widely known pioneer, Alexander Blair, who located in Madison county in 1848, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Effie Bishop on March 23rd. Mrs. Snyder had been in frail condition for several months, death coming at the age of 78 years.

She was married to Andrew Snyder, another pioneer, soon after the civil war, six children being born to them all out living their parents.

Rev. George D. Rogers conducted the funeral services on March 25th with interment in the Winterset cemetery.

OBITUARIES – Rachel Snyder

Rachel Blair Snyder, daughter of Alexander and Martha Blair, was born in Indiana March 4, 1844, and passed away March 23, 1922, aged 78 years. She came to Madison county with her parents when but four years of age, locating a few miles east of Winterset in Union township.

She was married to Andrew J. Snyder in 1866 and to them were born six children, Emma Shuey and John Snyder of Des Moines, Effie Bishop, Minnie Griffith, Berteen Clark and Nellie of Winterset, all of whom were with the mother during her last illness, which extended over a period of six weeks.

When a girl of fourteen she became affiliated with the First Baptist Church of this place, and remained a member of that organization until her death.

Since the death of her husband in 1916, she has made her home with her daughter Mrs. Bishop. Besides the six children, thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one aged brother, George Blair, of Afton, Iowa, survive.

Funeral services conducted by her pastor, Rev. Geo. D. Rogers, were held from the late home at ten o’clock Saturday morning.
